Through genomics, DOST plans to produce a sugarcane variety w/ high sugar content, fungal resistant, high tillering and ratooning capabilities, a method of harvesting in which roots & lower plant parts are left uncut. Out of this stubble, a new crop grown ,matures earlier & gives same yield. DOST also plans to use marker-assisted selection that will bring down sugarcane breeding cycle from 7 to only 2 years! Marker-assisted selection identifies desirable traits of plants from early stage of its breeding cycle. This selection shows if sugarcane seedlings contain desired genes therefore reducing time & cost on producing a new variety of sugarcane. Genomics is a science, while GMO is genetic engg! GMO transfers a xenogene bt from bacteria and a resistance gene to the real money maker- an herbicide or weedicide w/c stoop labor advanced country farmers hate to do while DC farmrs lov doing! Thus, GMO prolific use of commercial herbicide induces co-evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds w/c can grow into weed trees!! GMO bfings in unknown protein genes w/c introduce the new danger of exotic xenoproteins w/c are antigens creating new exotic allergies. Genomics is superior to GMO!!
