Throwback: October 20, 2010 ACTIVITY REPORT ON THE QUEZON DISTRICT II HERMANO PULI SYMPOSIUM OCTOBER 20, 2010 NAZARETH HALL SARIAYA, QUEZON The office of the Provincial Governor sent copies of two Executive Orders, duly signed by the Quezon Provincial Governor David G. Suarez. Executive Order Number 23 Series of 2010 stipulated an order creating the Hermano Puli Memorial Committee, as well as determine its composition and functions, and, and for other purposes. Meanwhile, Executive Order Number 25 Series of 2010 directed the creation of four District Committees to facilitate the simultaneous celebration of Hermano Puli Day. Among the aforementioned concerns were a lap top, projector with screen, two microphones, sound system, Certificates of Appearance as well as the food for the attending participants. For Sariaya, the Hermano Puli Memorial Committee and the QPTO requested that the Symposium should accommodate 100 persons since District II is much smaller in area, with only five municipalities and one city represented, though it is the most populous in the whole of Quezon. The speakers assigned were Dr. Ferdinand C. Llanes and Dr. Jaime B. Veneracion, both history professors from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. As such, the Sariaya Local Government Unit and the Sariaya Tourism Council sat down to plan for the simple yet meaningful holding of the Hermano Puli Symposium. Mr. Eric J. Dedace, Sariaya Tourism Council Secretary prepared the draft of the Activity Design for the undertaking. On Monday, October 18, 2010, letters of invitation from the QPTO were brought to Dolores, San Antonio, Tiaong and Candelaria towns by Ms. Criselda E. Obnial, Mrs. Mariles Carlos, and Mrs. Jo Ann C. Bandilla who likewise served as the driver. Enclosed with the letter are invitations in envelopes artfully prepared by STC Board of Directors member Ms. Malou V. Prado. Meanwhile, that same day, Mr. Dondon Martinez and Mr. Eric J. Dedace attended the final meeting of the Hermano Puli Memorial Committee headed by Chairperson Atty. Gilbert D. Camaligan at the Finance Building Conference Room in Lucena City. They were given 250 Hermano Puli button pins as well as streamers, posters and a big tarpaulin for the holding of the Symposium. Mr. Dondon Martinez was asked to coordinate for the preparation of the lap top and projector with screen wherein he requested the Municipal Planning and Development Center (MPDC) Office for the responsibility of its operation. The microphones, the sound system, and the chairs were the responsibility of the local parish office since the chosen venue, coordinated for by Ms. Criselda Obnial and Mr. Eric Dedace on October 16th, Saturday afternoon, was the very spacious Nazareth Hall. Mrs. Jo Ann C. Bandilla and Mrs. Tek C. Baligod took care of the arrangements for the food (morning snacks and lunch) for the undertaking. Early Tuesday morning, the day before the symposium, the draft of the Activity Design was finalized on paper for the necessary signing, just as the program for the Symposium was likewise finalized and printed, for distribution to all the delegates on symposium day itself. As always, Mr. Randy Luna of the Municipal License and Permits Office was tasked with the emceeing of the affair which is truly second nature to him. In the afternoon, Ms. Obnial and Mr. Dedace distributed more invitation letters to the Office of the City Mayor of Lucena City, as well as chosen people and schools in Sariaya, with the assistance of Human Resource Management Office Staff Ms. Maila Alcala. In no time at all, the QPTO staff led by the Supervising Operations Officer Ms. Hazel Habito – Javier arrived with the two symposium speakers, Dr. Ferdinand C. Llanes, and Dr. Jaime B. Veneracion. With them was Mr. Dedace who, together with Ms. Obnial had given the two speakers comprehensive introductions about Sariayahin history and local heritage. By then, representatives from the Department of Education as well as students from the various high schools were already seated in their respective tables, so with LGU Sariaya employees and the Parish priest himself, Msgr. Noe Loredo. Municipal Administrator Cenon Allan V. Loria represented Mayor Rosauro V. Masilang to the whole plenary that likewise included the other delegates from the Quezon II District except Tiaong town which was not able to send any representative. It past 9:30 AM already and with the waiting time for the other attendees to arrive already eating into the symposium schedule, Mr. Dedace was requested to go to the microphone to invite everyone to have their hearty morning snack of “Buchi, Palitaw, Minukmok and Tamalis” with ice tea first for convenience. Thereafter, Mr. Randy Luna started with the day’s program, calling on Mrs. Levy briones for her a capella doxology song number, followed soon by Mrs. Claire Obnial who led the singing of “Lupang Hinirang”. After that, Mr. Luna requested all the delegates to stand up to be acknowledged amid heartwarming applause before he introduced Municipal Administrator Cenon Allan V. Loria for the welcoming remarks on behalf of Mayor Masilang. As always, Mr. Loria was in his best elements, what with his great gift for speaking and addressing his audience as always, that earned for him an appreciative applause from everyone. On behalf of Mayor Masilang, he expressed great appreciation for everyone, especially those form the other Quezon II towns, who took the time and to come to attend this eventful undertaking for the cause of Hermano Puli’s ultimate recognition and appreciation as a National Hero of the Philippines. With that, Mr. Luna called on Mr. Dedace to introduce the first lecturer, Dr. Ferdinand C. Llanes, a former chairman of the UP Diliman History Department, as well as the Philippine Academic Consortium for Latin American Studies. He was likewise a former President of the “Asosasyon ng mga Dalubhasa, mayhilig at Interes sa kasaysayan” and an awardee of the “Gawad Collantes sa Sanaysay in 1999”. He also co authored books such as “Kasaysayan ng Bayan”, “Sampung Aralin Sa Kasaysayang Pilipino”, “Katipunan: Isang Pambansang Kilusan” and “UP In The Time Of people Power”. Dr. Llanes provided a very clear and comprehensive introduction of Apolinario de la Cruz or “Hermano Puli”, and related all the important ,milestones of his brief but eventful and heroic life, that ended in his martyrdom on November 4, 1841. After much applause that greeted Dr. Llanes’ inspiring lecture, Mrs. Levy Briones gave a stirring and strongly-felt rendition of Lea Salonga’s “Tagumpay Nating Lahat” in a capella, that saw the audience clapping alongside her beautiful and highly poignant singing . Mr. Luna then requested Mr. Dedace to introduce the second lecturer of the day, Dr. Jaime B. Veneracion, who is a retired Professor of History likewise from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. He is currently a consultant of the Bulacan Studies Center, the Bulacan State University and a former chair of the UP Diliman Department of History. He was a former president of the “Asosasyon ng mga Dalubhasa, Mayhilig at Interes sa Kasaysayan” as well as the “Samahang Pang Kasaysayan ng Bulacan”. He authored a number of books like “Agos ng Duugong Kayumanggi: Kasaysayan ng Pilipinas”, “Kasaysayan ng Bulacan”, “History of Malolos”, “History of Spain” and “History of Agriculture in the Philippines”. He was awarded the Outstanding Publication by the National Academy of Science and Technology for his book “History of Agriculture” and likewise, was awarded third place for his book “History of the Civil Service in the Philippines”. Mr. Luna then called on Ms. Cris Obnial to facilitate the open forum that turned out to be as absorbing, interesting and stimulating as the lectures, indicative of the great success of the endeavor. Thereafter, Mr. Luna called on QPTO Supervising Officer Ms. Hazel Habito Javier and the two lecturers to hand over the Certificate of Appreciation and the T shirt token from the Hermano Puli Memorial Committee to Municipal Administrator Cenon Allan V. Loria who received them on behalf of Mayor Rosauro V.Masilang. Then, he and Mrs. Javier presented the Certificates of Appreciation and T shirt tokens to Dr. Llanes and Dr. Veneracion for the exemplary dissemination of information on Hermano Puli to the representatives of the Quezon District II constituency. With that, the highly successful and eventful Quezon District II Symposium on Hermano Puli came to an end, and everybody was called to line up to the buffet table for a hearty and delicious lunch prepared by the Sariayahin hosts.
