Throwback Thursday April 24, 1951 -- Author: G. J. Beto Read 1 John 4:7–17 Perfect Love “I have loved thee with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee.” Jeremiah 31:3 Just before the actress Lupe Velez took her own life, she penned a death note in which she asked: “How could you fake such great love . . . ?” Frequently we experience disappointment when we learn that someone’s pretended love or affection for us is not genuine. However, we know that God did not “fake” His love for us. If it is true that “love manifests itself through gifts,” God’s love has been thoroughly manifested. John assures us: “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only-begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him.” Moreover, since God has given the dearest object of His heart, it is impossible to regard His love as faked love, for “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” More amazing, God did not wait to reveal His great love to us” until we had made ourselves loveable. No, “God commendeth His love toward us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Has that perfect love passed unnoticed or gone unrequited by us? Blessed are all who can say: “We have known and believed the love that God hath to us.” Amazing goodness! Love Divine! Oh, may our grateful hearts adore The matchless grace nor yield to sin Nor wear its cruel fetters more!
