Throwback Thursday: Check Out This Picture Of Spelman Colleges Class Of 1892, Arent They Lovely?. Founded by Sophia B. Packard and Harriet E. Giles in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Seminary. With a $100 gift from First Baptist Church Of Medford Massachusetts the institution began in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The school was also given financial support by John D. Rockefeller and named Spelman Seminary in honor of his wife s family. Spelman received its collegiate charter in 1924 and was the 4th womens HBCU to receive this distinction, making Spelman one of the oldest HBCUs for women.
