Throwback Thursday: Landing this role was an all-day casting round - TopicsExpress

Throwback Thursday: Landing this role was an all-day casting round of auditions that culminated in a final meeting with the writer, producers and director. When I was brought into the meeting, the director coughed and remarked that he might be coming down with something. The casting director asked if he wanted to take a break and he retorted: No, I like to suffer. To which I quipped: If you REALLY want to suffer, you should become an actor. The room went silent and then the director burst into laughter and said: Become an actor...thats funny! And probably true..e on lets do this. I turned to the room and flashed an enthusiastic smile and said: Yep, lets do this! Was mine the best audition that day? Who knows? But it was certainly the most memorable...and I got the job and played OJ Simpsons wife for three seasons on The HBO series FIRST & 10. Going into pilot season, I tell this story as a reminder to actors that by the time you become a finalist for a role, your talent is already a given. So forget about trying to out act anybody...it will only make you tense. Instead, remember to relax and be PRESENT in the room. Be AUTHENTIC. There are a lot of variables that go into the casting process that have nothing to do with your talent. So dont try too hard. Just do YOU. Be memorable.
