Throwback Thursday! Northwest Lineman College has been and continues to be, a large proponent of maintaining the history of not only linework, but the electrical industry as a whole. The folks at Alabama Power share that same passion. Built in 1896, the state of the art Powell Avenue Steam Plant provided electricity to Birmingham, Alabama. Not only did it provide power to its customers, it also provided power to the second largest trolley system in the nation, built in 1904. Alabama Power procured the steam plant when it acquired Birmingham Electric in 1952. At that time, the plant stopped its production of power and began producing steam to heat downtown businesses. Powell Avenue operated continuously for 117 years until its closing in 2013. Today, Alabama Power is committed to restoring the historic building with plans of stabilization already in the works. While final plans are still very fluid, planners and company officials are reportedly considering converting the plant into a cultural and entertainment destination. Many of the historic elements from the plant including two large generators, boilers, and ladders - which have been preserved and stored since its closing, will most likely find their way back into the building when renovations are complete. Please take a moment to learn more about the Powell Avenue Steam Plant and the historical impact it has had on the community it served for more than a century. #throwbackthursday youtube/watch?v=yTM1pKXJklQ
