Throwback Thursday: in honor of Independence Day tomorrow, Im sharing one of the reasons I think this is a great country. One photo (below - left), is of my paternal grandmother, who left the Ukraine during the Russian Revolution; she traveled through Poland, and arrived to the US through Ellis Island. She finally earned her citizenship in 1944. (She married my grandfather, also a Ukrainian, in the US -- he left through Austria.) The other (below - right) is a pic of my maternal grandmother, who was the first licensed practical nurse in the state of Illinois, while raising 10 kids. Her husband was a school teacher. Her ancestors (and therefore mine!) have been in the US since before the American Revolution, and was a direct descendant of Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island. Daughters of the American Revolution on one side; 2nd generation immigrant on the other. God Bless America!
