Throwback Thursday, the Series. While digging through my closets for a yard sale I found a box. A veritable tbt treasure trove filled with superhero drawings from a long-ass time ago. Some of them are characters I’ve gone on to draw professionally, some… well, you’ll see. Every Thursday I’m going to pull one of them out and assess, deconstruct, and annotate it, perhaps you’ll come along on the journey. This week we have… Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic! Guys, I cannot overstate the profundity of the epiphany Ive had gazing upon this drawing. It’s no secret that the Fantastic Four has been a troubled franchise for much of its history, both on screen and on the page. There was Lee & Kirby, there was Byrne. There was Waid, and recently there was Hickman, but between all those monumental runs, there’s been a lot of meh. But you guys, the answer is right here, wearing a yellow belt and sporting a Rogue streak, staring me in the face. The crucial je ne sais quoi that the FF has been missing THIS WHOLE TIME. And I had it figured out at age 4! (4!! Holy shit!!) Karate. Duh. Just imagine, a stretchy guy who knows karate?! No one could escape his chops!! DEVASTATING! I have drawn Mr. Fantastic professionally. Although I’ve drawn most of the other FF characters numerous times, I’ve only drawn Reed the once. Weirdly, I’ve drawn Valeria Richards on a whopping 6 covers, across 3 different titles, which may be the most instances of any character, that isn’t a regular in a book I’m the cover artist of… but I digress. Here’s Mr. Fantastic on the cover of X-23 #15, down for the count and getting spooned by Spider-man. Guess what? That would NEVER have happened if he knew karate. Come back next week! It’s a big box…
