Throwback Thursday, the Series. While digging through my closets for a yard sale I found a box. A veritable tbt treasure trove filled with superhero drawings from a long-ass time ago. Some of them are characters I’ve gone on to draw professionally, some… well, you’ll see. Every Thursday I’m going to pull one of them out and assess, deconstruct, and annotate it, perhaps you’ll come along on the journey. This week we have… Dracula! Wallachias favorite son!* So first impressions: I note again the bold shift from traditional red to a brazen magenta. Primarily in evidence on the bow-tie, and the, er... stomach house fly...? As with my Spider-man, I suspect this move has more to do with a lack of available tools on hand (ie. a red crayon) rather than my being some kind of prescient pre-Christopher Doyle, Christopher Doyle. On the other hand, closer inspection reveals something that looks suspiciously like red on those walrus-like fangs, so maybe, just maybe, Im a genius after all. Im also pretty taken with the slightly unsettling addition of a Francis Dolarhyde-esque pantyhose half-mask. Which if you know that story, is sort of thematically resonant. See? Genius. Obvi. What can I say about this much more recently-produced alternate cover for Marvels Tomb of Dracula Omnibus Vol 2, featuring the same man? Well, other than, I embraced the color red here in all the ways my five year old self refused to, not much. Although who knows? We cant see the good Counts feet obscured as they are by foreground tombstone and swooning female. For all we know, he could be rocking those same snow-white disco shoes. *Big D is incorrectly attributed to Transylvania. And I should know, Im ACTUALLY Transylvanian. Hes not one of ours. All that is a bunch of bull feathers. Come back next week! It’s a big box…
