Throwback day 5. A couple years into working at ArenaNet I got a real itch to learn more about what kind of artist I am and find out about construction, design, and broader categories of making art. In the day to day, most companies want you to fit into a mold you pour into. Im not that person. Im a curious builder. I dont need to know the fine points of the tools, just the broad strokes to get me there. Looking back, Im sure I would have been in a prop shop in an earlier era doing design to finish in small teams. I spend what down time I get trying to learn new materials and methods to make things I think are neat. I really really want to make a bunch of animatronic creatures. My biggest lament is I never have enough time to make anything polished outside of work. I want to make a full creature suit someday thats of movie quality. Probably have one of my friends run around in it, because, likely, it will be too heavy for me. Since moving to Seattle 10+ years ago Ive had a wonderful time working. As up and down and dramatic as work can be, its still a fantastic ride as a whole. Ive found a loving creative community to feel involved with and inspired by. A kind of rare joy that Im not sure I express enough to the people around me up here. Yet, even understanding this good fortune, I will continue to give in to the selfish restless drive to push for better things . Who I am today will always want for who I am tomorrow, and that person will always long for others to travel with. That is my hunger, my frustration, that is where my art comes from. The art below is from several years ago, over a course of years. Some examples of things I like to play with. Im fascinated by urethanes and gelatins. Animation and painting. Texture and acting. Story and space.
