#ThrowbackThursday : The grand opening of Gowdy Field was celebrated in March, 1925, with a game between the NY Giants and the Washington Senators. The field was dedicated to Sgt. Hank Gowdy, the first major leaguer to enlist in WWI. Gowdy went back to professional baseball after the war, and he pitched for the Giants that day they beat the Senators at Fort Benning. He came back to the Army during WWII at the age of 53, and this time he was commissioned as a captain and sent to Fort Benning to head up the athletics program. Here you can (almost!) see him throwing the first pitch.
