Thumbnail review: Lucy Lucy is a movie about a woman who not only happens to be Scarlett Johannsson, but also develops fantastic intellectual superpowers, thanks to being forcibly administered massive amounts of a drug that makes you smarter. (This drug, by the way, bears a striking resemblance to Walter Whites blue meth, for whatever thats worth.) In fact, Scarlett, as Lucy, eventually becomes able to use 100 percent of her brain, compared with the paltry 15 percent or so the rest of us use. For some reason, this makes some really bad guys really want to kill her, and her want to kill them, which naturally entails many car chases and explosions, and gargantuan discharges of ordnance. All of which is shot through with copious quantities of sophomoric philosophizing (primarily from Morgan Freeman at his profoundest) about the nature of life, evolution, intellect, and consciousness, the ultimate power of the brain, and the destiny of the human race. Sound like the makings of at least an interesting popcorn movie? Ill just say this: Our family once had a cat named Lucy. Lucy had a brain about the size of a golf ball, probably, and, judging from how much she slept, I doubt she used more than 10 percent of it. Even so, our Lucy was way more interesting than Scarletts Lucy. Not recommended for those who use more than 1 percent of their brains.
