Thursday 17th July Koala Room Update: Today in the Koala room we did lots of sensory and messy play. Linda started the morning with our 2 favourite books, “Teddy Bear, Teddy, Bear” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” Some of the Koalas joined in the actions with clapping and stomping. Then we went outside and played with yellow, glittery ‘Goop’. Will explored the goop using his flat hand to splash it as well as sticking his fingers in it and then tasting it. Layla picked it up with her fingers and watched it ooze down her hands and arms. Jackie sang “Slippery Fish, Slippery Fish”, using the goop to show the fish swimming through the water. Possum Room Update: What a beautiful day today! Outside Jackie set up a tray of goop for the children. This sensory experience allowed the children to explore the feel of the goop with their hands. Bronte, Lylah, Jaanavhi, Maya and some of the babies next door sang the song slippery fish. The children drew the fish/octopus/shark in the goop tray and watched it merge back into a blob of goop. Donna also held a sensory group by painting the children’s hands. Henry Lukas, Oliver and Charlie enjoyed their hands being painted on whilst Sienna, Laila and Lachlan were still a little unsure if they liked the sensation. In the sandpit Bobbi and Julia sat with the children cooking and making sand moulds for the children to jump on. Bailey lined up his moulds of sand before rolling through them and squishing them flat. On the side of the sandpit Jackie put some sand and cars in a little tray. Oliver, Henry and Maya pushed the cars through the sand saying “brrrmmm broom” and “beep beep” as they collided in the small tray. Jackie pointed out the tracks the cars made in the sand as they were pushed through. Bilby Room Update: Today educators used the iPad for the children to play some educational games and do some colour and shape matching while we were outside in the lovely warm sun. Havarna was a bit curious about the iPad, Bonny gave Havarna a turn on the iPad and she experimented with taking some photos, with a little help from educators to hold up the iPad. I asked who would like their photo taken? Sallie and Rihanna both volunteered for Havarna to click away, she took some lovely photos of Sallie and Rihanna; they both showed off their poses and smiles. There was lots of excitement in the girls as I showed them their pictures. Today the Bilby and some of the Platypus children ran around outside with our student Sophie, they all were running away from the bear and ended up in the cubby house to hide from him. There were lots of laughter and giggles throughout the morning from this game. Lots of digging happening amongst some of the children as they were making deep holes while in the sandpit, some children used spades, while others used their hands or little trucks and diggers. Platypus Room Update: Reflection on music and the “Three little pigs” by Tony. Today we were singing some popular songs including “There was a princess long ago”, “Frozen/let it go” and “Gummi Bears dance song”. Tony introduced a song about the three little pigs after Miley started talking about the big bad wolf. We sang the song about “Whose afraid of the big bad wolf” and looked up the song and video on Youtube. We watched the clip and then played some games-> drawing the three little pigs; building a house of bricks and playing chasey outside Kangaroo Room Update: Reflection by Micheal Zebra fever, following on from yesterday’s research about zebras the children participated in a wide range of activities that revolve around zebras and their colours. We used marble painting to create our own unique zebras, we practiced our Z’s with a Z writing sheets, we discussed if Zebras are white with black stripes or are they black with white stripes?. The children used collage to create their own white with black collage and a black with white collage master pieces. We also rediscussed what we already knew about zebras promoting the children to use what they also discovered or found out about zebras. We discovered what sound zebras make when Deanna showed us all a video of some zebras, we also compared the sounds of a horse to a zebra and we discovered that just because the zebras look like horses doesn’t mean they sound like horses. The children also discovered that zebras have hooves that they use for walking on. Justin rolled the marbles around the tray making sure that he got some paint on the marbles as they made their tracks.William enjoyed manipulating the tray tilting it in the direction that he needed the marbles roll, he became quite good at making sure the marbles picked up some of the paint to spread on the paper. Myah and Skye cut their white pieces of paper into small pieces practicing their fine motor skills before gluing them to the paper for their black with white stripes picture.Tomorrow we will investigate the Zebra further and have a discussion about why we think the zebras have stripes and horses don’t and what they need hooves for. Please don’t hesitate to walk around the room to see what the children have created or learning about Emu Room Update: During morning meeting we discussed that yesterday afternoon Shanita expressed that she wished to hunt for treasure and this morning Riley explained that he wanted to make a dragon. We thought that it would be a great idea to combine both of these ideas and make a dragon that went on a treasure hunt. The children were eager to get to work on the project for the day and had lots of suggestions to make. Alexander suggested that Shanita could be the treasure as she had sparkles on her top. Ryan, Arliah and Eva all made the recommendations of glue and scissors. The children chose to: - Create treasure and a treasure box with Anne and Ally - Create treasure maps with Nadia - Make the dragon with Jenna. Riley, Ace and Seth worked on the head of the dragon. Lyla, Jacinta, Eva, Rebecca, Olivia, Tilly, Alec, Tyson, Ryan and Angus all worked on the belly of the dragon. Alec noticed that no one was working on creating the tail. Shanita was eager to attach streamers to the dragon and soon had Angus, Lucas and Charlie assisting with this process. William, Stephanie, Arliah, Danika, Seth, Olivia G, Isabella R, Alex, Ace and Cody all created their own treasure maps before combining each of their ideas into one large treasure map that Meela and Eva would later guide us with. Lucia, Olivia G and Gracie all enjoyed creating a treasure box that all of the gold could be stored in. After fruit we set out on our treasure finding adventure. We were sure to read the map first which led us around the oval and towards the long jump pits. Disaster struck half way around the oval when the dragon split into two pieces and later into three pieces. The poor dragon was left for dead as the children sprinted across the oval in search of the gold. Shanita and Tyson uncovered the treasure box and did a beautiful job sharing the gold amongst all of the friends in the Emu Room. Thank you to Shanita and Riley for sharing their great ideas during morning meeting time.
