Thursday 22.01.14 NEW RECRUITS ARRIVE IN MBP Alotau welcomed 19 of 25 new police officer recruits on Tuesday this week in a special parade. Among them are four female officers. Provincial Police Commander chief superintendent Joseph Morehari reminded that Alotau is mostly peaceful and to be mindful of using inappropriate force unless warranted in the line of duty. This was also supported by Governor Titus Philemon who asked that they adapt their policing tactics to the way of life here. The Milne Bay Provincial Government has spent well over K1.6mill on equipping the force this year, including two brand new ten seater land cruiser vehicles for patrols, setting up a police radio network communication system all over the province and building duplexes to boost accommodation. The duplexes out at KB suburb will be opened in the next week or so to house these new recruits who will be based in Alotau boosting police manpower to a little over 100 in the township. Meantime, PPC Morehari at the parade on Tuesday also announced that officers will now handle their own accommodation electricity bills in attempts to impart and encourage budgeting, a savings culture and more importantly responsibility. Alotau may be the first to do so. PPC Morehari meantime had at the start of the year handed government their 2015 Strategic Plan themed Prevention First with a focus on curbing the rise in police brutality and he urged his men and women to set a new direction for the force from out of Alotau.
