Thursday Devotional - 11/14/13 Comforted After staying overnight in a hotel, don’t we often find ourselves wishing for the comforts of our own bed? How many of us have a comforter on our bed during cold winter nights? We know this cold world brings trials and tribulations that make us feel uncomfortable. Paul said upon his arrival in Macedonia that he was troubled on every side. Don’t we identify with Paul at times when he stated, “outside were conflicts, inside were fears”? Like confused sheep, we need the Good Shepherd’s rod and staff to comfort us along life’s way. The shepherd’s rod was used for protection and the staff for communion to pull the straying sheep back to the flock. Paul said in Second Corinthians 7:6, “Nevertheless God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus…” All of us have felt downcast at times. It might be a season of life where there is physical, emotional, or mental distress. As a believer, God has sent the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, to lead, guide, and direct our path through that trial or test. We can find joy in knowing that the Good Shepherd’s rod and staff are there to comfort us. Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd and He is the source of our comfort. Second Corinthians 1:3-4 states, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation...” Life is not fair. This world will bring conflict and fear and make us feel uncomfortable. Often in times like these we may look to a doctor or a pastor to comfort us. However, we find Paul being comforted by one of his own disciples, Titus. In a spirit of humility, we need to let God’s rod and staff comfort us. Also, we need to humble ourselves and let others be a source of comfort to us in times of need. It may be someone we least expect!
