Thursday, January 15 Luke 22:39-46 JESUS PRAYED IN ANGUISH And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Luke 22:44, NKJV According to James Montgomery (1771-1854), “Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire, unuttered or expressed; the motion of a hidden fire that trembles in the breast.” This explains the prayer of Jesus in our text. It was in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest. He was about to face the toughest challenge of His life: death on the cross. Not only did He mobilize His disciples to pray, He Himself withdrew about a stone’s throw to them, knelt down and prayed. Jesus prayed so earnestly until His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. We need people who will pray like Jesus prayed; people who will pray for their lives, families, friends and churches. We need intercessors that will stand in the gap for our generation. When we are weak on our knees, we become so cold and the enemy can easily get us down. We must allow the Holy Spirit to help us overcome weakness in our prayer lives (Romans 8:26-27). Why not ask the Holy Spirit today to sharpen your prayer life? Our prayer altars will receive fresh fire from God’s presence in Jesus’ name. • Birthday Blessing: Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. John 16:24 Read Bible Through Passage: Gen. 36, 37; Matt. 12:1-21 To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing. – Martin Luther
