Mary Murphy Ill speaks of her three children with great pride, saying they are the reason she survived the death of her husband, FDNY Capt. Frederick Ill Jr. It wasnt necessary for me to be as strong before because I had him with me, said the 58-year-old Pearl River resident. He was not only my husband, he was a great dad and he was my best friend. With his death, she said, she faced the toughest challenge of her life. My main objective was to concentrate on them. I wanted them not to be afraid and to know everything was going to be OK despite what happened. I did what I had to do. I made it all about the kids. Her oldest child, named after her husband, is now a lieutenant with the FDNY, having started out with the department just a few months before the Sept. 11 attacks. Shes forever thankful that her son, now 32, got to work with her husband before he was killed in the attacks. Daughter Lauren Fregonese is 29, married and a new mother living locally. Jennifer Ill, 22, recently graduated college and is working in a law firm in Nyack. I have three remarkable kids who have really come out of this shining, she said. Each followed their dreams. As for herself, she continues to work as an office manager for a physicians office and lives in the house she shared with her husband. This year would have marked their 25th wedding anniversary. She said he lives on through her family. His name is part of a lot of our conversations, she said. We remember him as we move forward.
