Thursday, January 8, 7:00pm Sidney was exhausted all day! She was awake shortly after Dr. Einspahr did his rounds at 7 this morning and while they got her dressed and ready for therapy, but when Michelle and Pam, the physical therapists came in, she promptly went to sleep and slept through most of the session. It didnt matter, they worked her anyway! She didnt wake up much more for Rachel, the speech pathologist, later in the morning. Rachel tested her swallowing by using what looks like a huge Q-tip that is lemony sour tasting and touches her tastebuds in the back of her mouth to trigger her swallowing reflex. Every little bit of Sidneys brain needs rebooted much like a computer. All of the codes need to be reset to start working again. It will take a long time, but eventually shell be making those connections and be able to do things again. Christine, our social worker, met with us all this afternoon and gave us the goals the team wants to reach in the next 4-6 weeks. The majority were to be at 25% in functioning...being able to sit up, swallow, hold things 25% of the time. The larger things were to be completely free of the ventilator, trach tube and neck brace. Today marks 3 weeks since her accident. This has been life changing for all of us. Not only what has happened to her, but how we view the world. Each day will get better, one baby step at a time. ❤️
