Thursday November 13 Hundreds of cars and trucks race along the H-1 freeway, seemingly unaware of a historical and cultural treasure nearby. Moanalua Gardens is a privately owned public park that once was part of an estate owned by Samuel Mills Damon. The summer cottage of Prince Lot (Kamehameha V) sits beside the duck and koi ponds. The Chinese Tea House was brought over from China and rebuilt by Mr. Damon. Ancient trees shade the hula mound where the Prince Lot Hula Festival is held every July. Streams from Kamana Nui and Kamana Iki valleys surround the park. The star attraction, however is the Hitachi Tree, a majestic old monkey pod tree that is the icon for the famous company in Japan.
