Thursday, November 14th inspired by Starla Faye Quiet in Spirit “… that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.” 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 15:10 It has been 15 years since my earthly father closed his eyes on September 14, 1998, I miss him so. There’s so much I want to share with him, both the highs and lows of my life have been experienced with him watching over me. He was a simple man full of buried wisdom. I remember discovering my great grandparents owned 365 acres of land in Lumpkin, Georgia which is in Stewart County. Clearly there wasn’t a movement to save the trees because my great grandfather would sell trees off his land to a local wood company. He would then allow them to cut down the trees and he would get paid. As a result, the local community of people, both black and white looked to our family for help during the lean and cold months. I said Dad, “Why you never told me about this before?” His reply was, “You never asked.” So funny, my heart smiles when I think of him even now. My father came from a lineage of hard working people: his grandparents, parents and his siblings—work ethic has been engrained within us from the top down and wide, and he certainly passed that character trait onto me. He used to talk to me about working and staying focused. I often thought I let him down, never meeting his expectations of me as they were lost in his silence. He was indeed a quiet man. I never heard the words ‘I’m proud of you;’ he never saw me achieve at the level I have prior to his death. His personal convictions are instilled within me: get up when I don’t feel like it and put in a honest day’s work; sacrifice to make ends meet for the family; don’t show up late—that’s disrespectful; and treat everyone the same. Now that’s real talk loud and clear. Prayer: Father, I thank You for the love of my earthly father, and for knowing that I’ll always have a Heavenly Father to watch over and guide me. I pray I make you both proud. Amen.
