Thursday October 18, 1973 Tony drove all night and finally took a break at 5:00am. While he curled up in the cab we took an opportunity to get out of the back of the truck and stretch. We are south of Perigueux in the Dordogne forest which has a significant place in WWII history. The sun is coming up filtering through the trees casting a warm glow on the countryside and the small farm beside the road to counter the 5C temperature this morning. After a 3 hour break and a cup of hot chocolate it is back on the road to Bordeaux and then south to Bayonne and Biarritz where we stopped at 11:30am for a lunch of canned mackerel and fresh bread from a local bakery. We have covered 750K since we left the campground at noon yesterday. We head off to the border at 2:00 and finally cross in to Spain at 3:30 at Hendaye at the truck crossing after being turned back at the regular crossing. The truck was more important to the border guards that those of us in the back. Headed south and made a stop at 7:30 but didnt get out as the rain had returned and we are already at 5C. Curled up as best we can for another long night of driving.
