Thursday Outlook: Congratulations! You have survived one of the most brutally cold days (Wed) in the last 10 years. Overnight temps fell into the -10s. We are some 20-25 degrees warmer tonight, as we have pushed into the 10-15 range. Temps will hold steady for the time being....and then fall once again. Blowing and drifting continues.....wind chills in the -10 to -18 range. Tomorrow will be feature temperatures falling to around 0-4 degrees by afternoon.....going sub zero once again. Our pattern looks to remain cold overall....and active. Sunday Night into Monday....models are still indicating freezing rain for parts of Indiana. Freezing rain occurs when snow falls from a cloud into an area of warmer air aloft. The snowflake melts. The area near the surface is at....or below freezing. The raindrop does not have time to refreeze. It hits the ground as a raindrop that freezes. Ice builds up..... Significant Freezing rain is the most dangerous and most destructive of all winter precip. One thing that I learned over time is that model guidance doesnt handle temperature pattern well when there is a deep snow pack (4 or more) Snow radiates the cold upward, thus keeping temperatures down. I am leery of any notion that those of us having snow on the ground will get above freezing over the next 7 days. Temperatures above the surface will determine what kind of precip we see Sunday into Monday. I am not discounting freezing rain for some locations.....but I am not sold on FZR for those who have a snow pack. Regardless of what form of precip falls, this system doesnt look as impressive as it did earlier in the week. It doesnt appear as strong as the Clipper that we experienced Monday into Tuesday. Colder air filters back into the area after precip ends on Monday. Our January Thaw doesnt look terribly lengthy or very warm for that matter. We begin to see a warm up of sorts beginning a week from today, but turn stormy and cold again after MLK Day. Friday: Areas of blowing snow under a Partly Sunny sky. Windy! Early High temps 9-15 falling to around 0-4 for those with snow cover by afternoon. Temps 5-10 in the afternoon for those with no snow. Lows +3 to -9 (snow pack locations) Wind Chills -10 to -20 Saturday: A mixture of sunshine and clouds Cold again!! Highs 9-16 Lows nearly steady.... 7-14 Sunday: Cloudy....snow or a mixture of snow/sleet/FZR possible later in the day. Highs 25-34 (34 far south) Lows 23-28 Monday: Morning snow, or a mixture. Cloudy. Morning highs of 25-33 falling steadily in the day. Lows +4 to -5 Tuesday/Wednesday: Partly Cloudy....at this point....it looks dry. Tuesday will be the colder of the two days. Tuesday temps....Highs 9-16 Lows +5 to -5 Thursday: Sunshine with clouds....THE WARM UP BEGINS!! Highs 22-30 Lows 12-18 (Not very warm huh!?!) More updates as needed.
