Thursday, September 24, 1998: This was the day before the 1998 annual convention of the L&N Railroad Historical Society. It was held in Williamsburg, KY that coming weekend---the 25th through the 27th---but for reasons I cant recall, I couldnt make it. However, I did take a day of vacation from work and met several of my friends for a great day of photography along the ex-L&N KD Subdivision between Corbin and Knoxville. Late that evening, we hiked into this spot on Cove Creek, just south of Jacksboro, TN. This is a finger of TVAs huge Norris Lake, a legacy of the New Deal that helped address the enormous flood and economic challenges of the region during the Great Depression. Bill Grady placed his camera on a tripod and did a self portrait as we waited between trains. First was southbound train Q549---followed by a coal train. Despite the periodic total eclipse thickness clouds, the sun was out full for both trains. Very pretty location, too.
