Thursday Thought When I was 17 years old, a friend in the high - TopicsExpress

Thursday Thought When I was 17 years old, a friend in the high school band turned me on to Chick Corea’s album "My Spanish Heart". It totally re-arranged my heart, and from that moment on, I was in love with strings. "Spanish Heart" was the single reason I studied classical composition and classical piano performance, and it was a large determining factor in my choosing to follow the path of a composer. “One day I will write for strings,” I said as I listened dreamily to everything and anything with violins, violas, and cellos. August 15, 2013 marked the fulfillment of a life-long dream for me as I sold my first string quartet to a student at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory! I have photocopied the check and plan to frame it! Where will my little piece end up? I know not. But I will be writing and organizing more than ever, and with renewed vigor, I will be promoting my composed works to all who are interested! In recent years, several reputable orchestral musicians have expressed interest in my string writing. I cannot tell you how happy that makes me! Their support is my incentive to finish several projects over the next few years. I post this to all of my friends as a pep talk for each of us, exhorting all of us to follow our dreams. What if I believed all of the negative voices I heard when I was a teenager? What if I had given up at any moment along the path over the years? I recently read that Scarlatti did not release his first published work until he was 53 years old. That puts me in good company (I have a year to go), and it spurs me on towards my next decade as a composer! Never give up!
