Thursdays Unhealthy Thinking Habit, Unraveled Black and white thinking This is when we believe that someone, or some thing, can only be good or bad, right or wrong. good or evil, happy or sad. This kind of cognitive distortion encourages us to believe things either DO or DONT fall into any certain category, when in fact, there is a lot of gray in our world. The next time you find yourself in this all or nothing mentality, it may help to jot things down in THREE columns. This encourages middle-ground, or gray thinking. You are challenging yourself on paper to consider if there were parts of the situation that were neither one extreme, or the other, but something in the middle. Catching yourself using black/white thinking language can encourage you to find the middle ground, the more balanced interpretation of the situation, the in between lens that is going to help you view your world more accurately. Your thoughts and feelings dont have to be right or wrong.....you dont have to be all in, or all out, of a situation. Perhaps you think of it as the Baby Bear in Goldilocks-----and then things will feel jusssst right. When you reduce your life to black and white, you will never see the rainbows.... Unknown
