Thursdays class focused on the Gyokko Ryu. There are essentially 9 basic foot movements in the Ryu. Ashibaki (footwork) are ways to move your feet. Any system that has evasion at its heart will have special footwork. To simplify this, footwork equals angles, and angles equal distance. To quote Bruce Lee he who controls distance, control the fight. Every movement in the Gyokko Ryu should cause the opponent to have to reorientate themselves. Remember, do not simply move once, move a minimum of three times. Once your opponent is following you, timing is created. When you adopt a principle in training or combat you are putting a established doctrine to use. One should try not to enter confrontation with a set idea e.g I m going to wrist lock this person, you should invoke the principle and opportunities will form themselves. Mushin is the art of no mind this doesnt mean have no brain, it means have no preset ideas as you enter the Frey. In 1993 Sensei Netzler held a ninjutsu seminar in NZ said, how can your enemy read your plans, if you, yourself have no plans. The Gyokko Ryu has many techniques that are similar to other Ryu. Its uniqueness is in its delivery system. We have learnt that any system that requires the understanding of timing will always be difficult to use. But this shows the evolution of the Gyokko Ryu as a system of higher thinking. As Sensei Jennings states a cerebral martial art not merely a block and bash martial art. This is why lower school students will often struggle with the Gyokko Ryu their skills are not yet natural/spontaneous enough to produce on demand. Hence why Gyokko Ryu is taught at 2nd degree black belt in Maai Hyoshi.
