Thursday’s Nutrition Nugget: Women, high-fat meals, stress, and weight gain. Not the headlines most of us want to see, but here it goes: Recent research suggests that when women experience a stressful event, eating a high-fat meal the following day can slow their metabolism (1). These daily metabolically slowing stressors could lead to an annual weight gain of 11 pounds! Stress also stimulates appetite, and since we can’t eliminate all the stress from our lives, choosing healthier comfort foods that are lower in fat may help combat this potential weight gain.
