Thus far in my life, theres only been one man who ever whipped my hind end when I got out of line and walked away from it without so much as a scratch. Only one man who ever called me out from a pulpit and told his entire congregation that yeah, it was that scrawny kid in the back row who burned down the bathroom. Same guy that taught me more about love and mercy and grace and redemption through his actions than any others combined have taught me through words. Same guy that showed me how to be a man in the worst of times as we went through losing mom, then went on to show me how to be a man in the best of times as he entered into a new covenant of marriage with Jeanne. Only one man in the world whose respect I ever desperately wanted to earn. Only one man who ever had to cope with the joys and heartaches that come with raising the headstrong and often way too big for his britches punk Ive often been. And now that hes old and there might be a chance I could take him, get some payback for all those whuppins way back when, the true nature of his diabolical wisdom comes fully to light. Wouldnt whup him now if I could. Because that sneaky little thing about respecting ones elders still applies. Particularly when said elders honorable life and unfailing love provided the foundation I now depend on to raise children of my own. Today is that mans birthday. And I thought yall should all know a little bit about why that matters. Happy birthday, Pop. I love you. But Im still a little sore about that pulpit announcement thing...
