Thx for the tag Kasper Winther Ambus! :) My name is Tobias, and Ive walked this earth for 25 years. I only lately realized just how long Ive been obsessed with movement. As a young child, living in the suburbs of Aalborg, Denmark, TV and comic books were my life. My favorite characters of fiction were especially: Spider-Man, Jim Carreys the Mask and Jack Skellington from the Nightmare Before Christmas - all gracefull, elegant and acrobatic movers. Moving to the suburbs of Copenhagen, I, very slowly, but surely, started moving. I got into swimming at the age of 7, and initially liked it, but for the freedom playing in the water, rather than for learning the correct strokes, improving my speed and distance etc. 12-years old, I started skateboarding, enjoying both the creativity, different styles and the satisfaction of learning a new trick. Whilst eating your typical diet of whatever a 12-year-old spends his allowance on. Still looooving watching TV, one thing I got obsessed with was watching Pro Wrestling, having my mom tape it every single week. I watched, and re-watched the acrobatic slams of the lighter guys like Rey Mysterio. I started thinking about wanting to learn some form of martial art. When the Spider-Man movie hit theaters summer of 2002, there was no more beating around the bush: I had to learn how to move like that, or at least as close as I could!! My friend, who just took up boxing told of a training partner of his, who also did Capoeira. Researching capoeira, I remembered playing Tekken 3, and I found a place I could train. Next year I will have done capoeira for half of my life. Wanting to get better, over the years, I took each element of capoeira and explored in its isolation. Dancing? I took samba and b-boying classes. Acrobatics? I took tumbling classes. I watched every Bruce Lee movie, and scoured the internet for videos (no YouTube before 2004, I think). I started strength training and stretching every day, mostly bodybuilder-style hypertrophic training and static stretches, JCVD style. Strength training took a bit too much focus actually, especially from watching all that Dragonball xD After my second trip to Brasil, I travelled to Scotland in 2009, to stay for a few months. Not being able to train Capoeira regularly, I tried different things like Muay Thai and Keysi Fighting Method, eventually developing a taste for MMA. Id seen it, only labeled as Ultimate Fighting, back when I started capoeira, but initially deemed it ugly and barbaric with no real beauty of technique, just brawn. Watching the real life meta-human skills of Anderson Silva, and technical intricacies of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I was hooked though, and I took up the Arte Suave in 2010, in an academy bearing that exact name. I am currently one year away of being a physio. I was pushed towards said profession in part from my natural interest in human anatomy and movement, and a big part from coming across Idos blog. As the last few years have passed Ive played with the routines and attended three seminars with Ido, integrating certain routines into my training. I want physical expression and physical therapy to meet, and make sweet love, in my practise. Although Ive explored many facets of moving, I am definently still struggling with specializing. I now try to balance out my training between Capoeira, Jiu jitsu, Muay Thai as well as tumbling, gymnastic strength training and Olifting/Kettlebells, spicing it up with Idos routines and what Ive picked up from him at seminars over the years. When not training, I move, always exploring the squat, the hang, stretching dynamically, loosening up my spine and neck A LOT, balancing on my hands, trying to sit as efficiently as possible in class, climbing the stairs pulling each step with the edge of my toes, sprinting for the bus etc. It brings me great joy, and I sincerely appreciate being part of this, well, movement with you guys. You are all, regardless of skill level, insanlely inspirational to me. Keep moving Tobias
