Exercise PITCH BLACK 14 will involve exercise participants conducting Offensive Counter Air and Defensive Counter Air missions being launched from RAAF Bases Darwin and Tindal. Exercise participants will utilise the Delamere Range Facility and Bradshaw Field Training Area. Mission scenarios will progressively become larger and more complicated through the course of the Exercise, requiring mission commanders to factor in a variety of air combat roles. Some of the roles which are practiced during Exercise Pitch Black include: Air-to-air combat Air-to-ground attack Airborne early warning and control Air-to-air refuelling Tactical air transport As well as this, many other groundborne roles – such as combat support, joint battlefield airspace control, employment of combat controllers (including joint terminal attack control), and exercise coordination – will be practiced during Exercise Pitch Black. The exercise areas used for Exercise Pitch Black are some of the largest in the world, and will feature realistic, simulated and re-created threats and targets. This provides an extremely useful training opportunity to participants. Up to 110 aircraft and more than 2300 personnel are expected to participate in Exercise PITCH BLACK 14. This will include personnel and aircraft from Australia: Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) F/A-18A Hornet (Darwin and Tindal) F/A-18F Super Hornet (Darwin) C-130J Hercules (Darwin) King Air 350 (Darwin) Hawk 127 Lead-In Fighter (Tindal) Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft AP-3C Orion (Tindal) KC-30 Multi-Role Tanker International personnel and aircraft Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) F-16 Falcon (Darwin) F-15SG Eagle (Darwin) Gulfstream 550 Conformal Airborne Early Warning (CAEW) (Darwin) KC-135 Stratotanker (Darwin) Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) JAS 39 Gripen Fighter Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Combat Support Personnel Exercise PITCH BLACK 14 will feature a number of newcomers including: United Arab Emirates MIRAGE 2000-9 fighters French Armed Forces in New Caledonia CN-235 tpt aircraft. International personnel and aircraft from a number of nations including New Zealand, Singapore, the US And the French Armed Forces from New Caledonia. Additional support from other potential supporting countries will be updated as planning for the Exercise progresses. Fielding these aircraft in a large-scale air combat exercise within Australia is an exciting event for Air Force, with the Super Hornet and Wedgetail demonstrating the next generation in technology.
