Tibet on Fire While I was studying abroad, I heard about Tibetan students like me in Tibet self-immolating setting themselves on fire. I feel so awful that I could not raise my voice for those brothers and sisters who have been pushed to the brink of desperation by the Chinese government’s brutal repression. There have been more than 135 cases of Tibetan self-immolation since 2009. If I was born in Tibet and was deprived from all the basic rights and freedoms, I would set myself aflame too, knowing it would be a painful death; rather than having those monsters put iron on my body and becoming one of their robots. It is easier having one open painful death in peace than dying every single day in a confined room. Yes, self-immolation is a violent act upon oneself; however, from a broader perspective; it cannot be straight away identified as violence because it is not intended at causing harm to anybody. Mahatma Gandhi elucidated, “In every freedom struggle, violent or non-violent, people lose a part of themselves to attain a larger goal.
