Tim Burton is a master of time and place. He created a dark Gotham, a soul less suburbia in Scissorhands, and the color splashed views in Big Fish. In this film, he gives us a slice of American history - North Beach SF and Honolulu in the late 50s and early 60s. This provides the backdrop for a story that would be far fetched if it werent true. It can be argued that Margaret Keane and her big eyed waifs have been the most popular paintings in American history. In my teens, it seemed everyone owned at least one of these copies. They were everywhere and never failed to capture our attention. This is the amazing story behind these creations. I suppose Julianne Moore will win the Oscar for Almost Alice, but the prize could easily go to Amy Adams for his performance of the unassuming but soulful Keane. I lived in Honolulu in the late 60s, a little after the bit in the film, and I did hear stories of people who claimed to have known Keane. I think she had a gallery there for a while. Of all the films I have seen this season, this may not be the most impressive, but for me, it was the most entertaining. A great story, formative time, and a legendary place - North Beach SF.
