Tim Burton sets fairy tale paycheck gigs aside and returns to quirky biopics about ridiculed artists with BIG EYES, a second collaboration with his ED WOOD screenwriters. I’ve always wondered why tacky Keane paintings were so prevalent in the 1960s and 70s, and loved learning that domestic dysfunction lies at the root of those kitschy images of saucer-eyed kids. Yet the truth is not strange enough to play as uproarious comedy, and it’s disappointing to see a large canvas of art themes get shrunk down in the second half to fit an outdated women’s lib fantasy. The subject matter is better suited to documentary rather than dramedy, but patrons of camp won’t mind tossing a few pennies at the appealing actors, ironic plot twists, and pop art production design. MILD RECOMMEND. - Stu
