Tim Burtons Corpse Bride stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, and Richard Grant. Released on September 23, 2005, the film is about a pianist who accidentally marries a dead bride. Its close to Halloween and you know what that means: more scary movies! This stop-motion animated flick is directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson. I really enjoyed some of Burtons works such as Alice in Wonderland and Frankenweenie. Hes been known for making movies creepy and entertaining. Burton is very familiar with stop-motion animation as he worked on The Nightmare Before Christmas with director Henry Selick. Its been a while since I first saw this film, so its a good thing I got a chance to see it again on television. I got to say, Tim Burton never fails to impress me with this haunting and bizarre love story. Johnny Depp voices the main character, Victor Van Dort, and I thought he gave out one of his unusual performances in his career…in a good way. I like Depp not only for his acting, but for the way he portrays his characters from Captain Jack Sparrow to the Mad Hatter. The other cast members, including Bonham Carter, did a nice job as well. The animation is very well done and its creepy atmosphere really helps, although it may scare young children. The story had a very interesting concept, but can be predictable at times. The film is also a musical. While I found most of the songs to be good, theyre not as memorable as the songs in The Nightmare Before Christmas or any other Disney musicals. Overall, Corpse Bride is one of the most enjoyable animated films Ive seen with its impressive animation, some good performances, and a haunting yet sweet story. Its not as good as Nightmare, but it gave it its best shot. If you like stop-motion animation, youll definitely enjoy this. Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
