Tim Rollins will be giving a lecture tomorrow Thursday, November 13th, at 7pm in Given Auditorium. In 1981 Tim Rollins and a group of kids from I.S. 52 in the South Bronx joined forces to create, what James Romaine calls, one of the most celebrated and controversial artistic collaborations of the past half-century. In a deteriorating art room covered in graffiti, Rollins saw the students potential for creating beauty out of destruction, for creating something beautiful out of their everyday experiences. Between 1981 and 1987 Tim Rollins and K.O.S (Kids of Survival) developed work from their immediate environment, such as Untitled (Bricks) (1982), and from critical engagement with texts, like the Colby Museums recent acquisition Darkwater (after W. E. B. Du Bois), 2013, currently on view in the Gordon Gallery of the Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion. The New York Times art critic, Roberta Smith, has referred to the work of Tim Rollins and K.O.S. as precocious masterpieces.
