Tim Wilkinson flirted with the lead at the News Sentinel Open in Tennessee before settling for another top-10 finish on the web Tour. Wilkinson carded a five-under par 66 in the final round at the Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville to climb seven places into a share of sixth. Wilkinson had rounds of 65, 70, 69 and 66 to be two shots back from American Peter Malnati who won by a shot from a group of four players. The Kiwi professional is projected to remain at ninth on the money-list and is preparing to return to the PGA Tour for the first time since 2009. He is the most consistent player on the web Tour without a win this year. Meanwhile, fellow Kiwi Steve Alker faces a nervous final week on the tour as he tries to secure his PGA Tour card for next year. The 42-year-old had a one-over par to finish in a share of 50th place. Alker, who won the Utah Championship earlier this season, is currently 22nd on the Order of Merit and he is projected to remain in that spot after the News Sentinel Open. There is only one event remaining on the web Tour season, the Cox Classic in Nebraska, and Alker must stay inside the top 25 to automatically qualify for the 2014 PGA Tour. Wilkinson and Danny Lee, who did not play this week and is 12th on the money-list, have already secured their PGA Tour cards for next year. So all eyes are on Alker and all Kiwi golf fans will be wishing him well for the final web Tour tournament of the season.
