Time To Set The Alarm: Microsoft To Warn Windows XP Users To Upgrade Before 8 April Microsoft is also offering users a free transfer tool to help them switch. Wednesday, March 05, 2014: Looks like it is finally the time to set the alarm! Even as the not-so anticipated Microsoft deadline for the end of Windows XP support draws near, the multinational is going all out in ensuring users of the famed XP do upgrade as soon as possible to Windows 8.1 (and not some other solution, of course!). The software giant has begun rolling out pop-ups and warning messages to Windows XP customers using the Home or Professional editions reminding them to upgrade. Microsoft, Windows XP, End of support, deadline, upgrade, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Notification, Windows update On 8 March, all the customers who have elected to receive updates via Windows Update, will receive an official notification informing them that support for Windows XP will end on 8 April. It will also come with a link to the Windows XP End of Support website for further information. Further, the company has released PCmover Express, a free transfer tool to help users in making that switch! “We have partnered with Laplink to provide Windows XP users with a free data migration tool called PCmover Express for Windows XP which copies your files and settings from your Windows XP PC to a new device running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. This tool will copy your files, music, videos, email and user profiles and settings from your old PC to your new device, transferring across your home or work network, and even enables Windows XP users to customise exactly what they want to bring over to their new device.” Microsoft said in a blog post. Microsoft will cease to provide official support and security fixes for Windows XP come 8 April 2014. Google and Mozilla in the mean time are providing an extra year’s support to their respective browsers on XP, a move that will be a short-term solution to web threats before users finally bid adieu to the famed OS.
