Time difference Uruguay to US just changed - alert your callers if you dont want a 2am surprise! Or if they dont want a 5am surprise from you, inform yourself. Backgrounder on the time zone issue, and links to make it easy to keep track, follow, keep reading! Reminder to fellow folks living here in Uruguay from the US/Canada, and those in most of North America with family or friends here - the US and Canada went back to standard time overnight. Between the reversed seasons, and Uruguay never having followed the USAs silly lead into Daylight Saving Time most of the year, time differences between US and Uruguay get a bit complicated. Depending on the date, Uruguay, and the US East Coast (for example) can be 1, 2, or 3 hours different. Uruguay time is always a later time than US (a term, later than which is less ambiguous in direction than ahead of), but the amount differs. By basic geography, the US/Canada Eastern Time zone and Uruguays single time zone are 2 hours apart - US East is GMT (more properly called UTC Universal Coordinated Time) minus 5 hours, whereas Uruguay is GMT/UTC-3. However, during USAs so-called Daylight Saving time, US East is GMT-4. Due to the USAs longer-than-sensible Daylight Time, the USA, during its Autumn season, stays on Summer time even after Uruguay, in its Spring season, switches to Uruguayan Summer Time (UYST). During UYST, we are at GMT/UTC-2, not our normal -3 hours earlier than Greenwich Mean Time. So for that few weeks, a period that just ended overnight in US/Canada we are back in sync, even though both countries are artificially an hour ahead of where they would be naturally. Now, Uruguay remains on UYST (Uruguayan Summer Time), but US East is back on EST (Eastern Standard Time). For non-USA folks who might not know, yes the US does everything different than the rest of the world, including S in timezone labels meaning Standard instead of the global-use Summer. BST is British SUMMER Time but EST is PST is (US/Canada) Pacific STANDARD Time. Thus right now, we are back to being 3 hours apart from East Coast US/Canada like Boston, Toronto, Washington DC, Miami. 6 hours separated from Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver. Be aware of that when calling relatives, who might not yet be up, or might not be home from work. Make sure they are aware of it, so they arent waking you up at 2am ringing your phone! (West coast relatives saying Well its only 8pm and you always stay up to midnight, its only 12 there, right? Umm, no! That was true back in September.) Main link is from the Chicago Tribune yesterday with a good set of maps of when time changes around the world. Article link: chicagotribune/news/nationworld/chi-daylight-saving-time-around-the-world-20141101-htmlstory.html I (this is Mark Mercer writing this post, if you havent already guess from its geekiness) recommend you set up a custom World Clock website bookmark, right in your browsers bookmarks toolbar or other prominent place. No software to install, no Java applet (it does use JavaScript, which is entirely different, and so does every other site including the one youre reading this on.) Once you have this bookmark, its one click, and you instantly know what time it is anywhere youre interested in. Heres my custom bookmark of 20 different cities in different timezones around the world where I want to instantly know the current time: timeanddate/worldclock/personal.html?cities=163,224,75,817,2132,236,1955,304,1960,466,33,240,951,131,51,233,232,155,192,1440. You can customize yours at this link: timeanddate/worldclock/setpersonal.html
