Time for reflection? How civilised are these two guys from Hong Kong towards the tourist from Mainland China? I think a big piece of mirror is needed for those who like to criticise to see how civilise they actually are before they open their mouth. I think a lot more empathy is needed. For sure, not all Chinese act like them. 1) These people who take a dump on the street because it is the norm and acceptable in their town/village. For sure, it is wrong in the eyes of the locals but for these tourists it is normal (looking from a social constructionist and relativist perspective). 2) In order to avoid more of these things from happening, the local government should do more to let tourist know that it is a crime, the Chinese government should do more at local level to educate etiquette and public civility, tourism office should inform tourist about unacceptable behaviour related to their travel destination, at the immigration and border should also provide information about these information, also we need more information around town. 3) the government should build more public toilets and this is an important aspect of tourism services that our government should provide to tourists. If you ask me, there isnt enough public toilet and most of us have to rely on local department store or fast food outlet to have one. For a tourist who is not familiar with the local area, this will be a very hard situation to deal with, and especially when you have children screaming out loud for a poo or wee wee. 4) This is my ultimate point. I dont think that it makes us any better if we use very degrading words or language to label these tourist who did not follow our own standards. By saying those words and expressing our anger with those words, it makes no one any more civilised than the accused. In conclusion, although I used to feel angry with the ill behaviour of some tourists who visit our city, I think my point 1, point 2, point 3 and point 4 have changed the way I perceive this particular situation. If I am in this particular situation and if I have time like these guys, I would guide these tourist to the closest toilet. If they are doing it already, I would tell them that it is illegal and police will give them a ticket for such bad behaviours and they should stop because I saw a police around the corner (scare them, but, making sure that I am being kind to them). I will then tell them where to take their kid for a wee wee. Be nice and be kind to all human being. And if they act aggressively, then as I have two other guys with me, I will call the police, take evidence with my camera, and guide a police to find my location. If they try to leave the area, I will ask one of my friend to stand on the crime scene, while I follow these tourist and via my phone, I guide police to find me. In summary, I will adopt a method that is anti-aggression. Because I have decent values, morals, ethics, education, culture and quality. I dont want to lose any of those because I am angry with a few tourists.
