Time for some story sharing at APLH, everyone invited to contribute: What was the experience/thing that made you turn to pursuing Golden Age of Piracy for the accurate things? What was the thing that made you go there has to be more to this period and these pirates than the image of them that I see in the general public? For me, I think it was a two part experience. One, in later high school I decided that I wasnt going to do just American Civil War history. While I had been into the mainstream image of pirates when I was a kid (from about 4 years old until I was about 10), the interest slowly came back to me through a computer game (called Sea Dogs) and reading both the Aubrey/Maturin series and Hornblower series on nautical fiction. Since I reenacted with a group of authentic-minded reenactors (when I say some of them were or had many friends who were former Mudsills some will understand what kind of reenactors they were), and found that to supplement my Civil War studies greatly, I decided to start doing research on pirates and maritime history (more of the latter than the former). Gathered books and online sources as best I could. This was when Pirate Brethren Forum was at peak activity. My second experience was the summer after my freshmen year of undergrad. I had a taste of studying Civil War, and while that was awesome, some of the work I did in class my freshman year at Gettysburg College and getting to see pirate reenactors first hand convinced me to redouble my efforts to expand my knowledge on pirate history and maritime/Atlantic world history of that era. Add onto this the resource that was the library at Gettysburg College (in particular, their interlibrary loan department), I was able to start the trail that lead me to now. Eventually, I found that I was more interested in pursuing this kind of history than the American Civil War stuff. How did you guys get into authentic pirate stuff?
