Time of Life eh? Im 48. I was born to older parents and consequently many of those dearest to me have already passed away. I lost my dad in 97, my mum two years ago and Uncle Tim last January. Today I was given the sad news that my Uncle Joe has passed away. He was 98 but just three years ago was still riding on his mower tending to his huge garden and taking frequent shopping trips around Staffordshire with my Auntie Winnie. He was a very special man to me. He was always so thoughtful, caring and considerate. From my early days in the mid 60s we had a special bond. As a toddler hed play with me on the beaches of Cornwall, keep me entertained during long European car journeys to northern Spain and southern France. I recall how we both laughed, high in the Alps as I had a wee wee in the snow. In 87 when I joined Signal Radio in Stoke on Trent I moved into a small bedsit in Hanley - Joe and Auntie Winnie would insist I popped over to their rural idyl near Uttoxeter for dinner and a good chat at least once a week. It was during this time he would share the fascinating tales of being a friend of Joey Bamford and recall the time Mr JCB first shared his plans for putting a shovel on the front of a tractor and painting it yellow. On Sunday on hearing my dear Uncle was poorly I travelled to the hospital in Stoke on Trent. I arrived outside permitted visiting times but after politely persuading the Matron of the ward that I really needed to see my dear Uncle I had some precious time with him. We shared some poignant words and I helped him with a drink. As I prepared to leave he thanked me for coming. I gave him a kiss and told him I loved him RIP Uncle Joe.
