Time to explain what is going on with the PEGIDA crap since a few weeks in Dresden - if you dont read German you might not really have understood so far. 8 weeks ago, after some street fights between Kurds and Salafists in other parts of Germany (and hooligan demonstrations because of that), here in Dresden a small-time criminal by the name of Lutz Bachmann (there was an awesome article about him this week, they did a great job uncovering his criminal past...break-ins, drug dealing, he even fled to South Africa to escape prison in Germany, essentially becoming a criminal foreigner, the exact thing they now demonstrate against) started organizing a march through town under the name of PEGIDA - Patriotic Europeans against the islamization of the occident. The name is stupid, and the people who joined him are stupid. They claim to demonstrate for German culture, against radical islam, and a lot of other things...however, its basically impossible to pin-point what they want, since they prohibit their followers to talk to the press and the speeches they give are just a stupid mix of anti-foreigner, anti-system bullshit. One thing is clear though: right wing people LOVED this new initiative, finally they had an outlet for their racism and their stupidity. Neo-nazis march with them, and even though normal idiots will claim again and again that they are no nazis...a simple look on their FB group clearly gives away the kind of fascist shit this whole initiative is assembling. And so the demonstrations grew, to astonishing numbers. Last Monday there were about 7,500 of them...yes, unfortunately we have a lot of stupid people in Dresden and surrounding areas. Probably because the whole thing is so insane it took the civil society of Dresden a while to wake up and realize what was happening. Including myself - you might know that I led our protests against the nazi marches in February and June...this time I just didnt wanna be in the cold because of these fools, I didnt really take them serious. However, a bunch of idiots, marching against foreigners through town, every Monday. Not cool. Last Monday there was finally a bigger counter-demonstration that managed to block the PEGIDA-march, right on Terassenufer next to Old Town. So the racists had to turn around and march back. Today, there is a big star-walk, organized by a ton of organizations and groups to finally show that the majority of people in Dresden does not agree with the PEGIDA-nonsense, but wants an open, welcoming, tolerant, international city. PEGIDA for the first time will *not* march, but hold a stationary rallye away from Old Town. So yeah, thats it in a nutshell. This thing most likely wont go away so fast, because those idiots seem quite motivated. I see 2 clear direct dangers from their actions: first, some of them might get even more radicalized and take actions a step further...20 years ago refugee homes were burnt here in East Germany, the mob was on the streets...neo-nazi attacks in Saxony have already been on the rise in the last years and it might get worse. And second: they ruin all efforts people like me are doing to make Dresden more welcoming for foreigners. I dont want people to sit in India, the States or Africa, thinking about that PhD or job offer in Dresden and deciding against it, because they have heard about these right-wing demonstrations. Thats why I fully support todays effort to take back the streets and our city from those idiots. Dresden is a wonderful city with a lot of wonderful people, lets put those fools in their place.
