Time to get back to the music now. On this day, 26 January, in 1991, rock legends Queen had their second UK number 1 with Innuendo, the opening track on the album of the same name, which was released as the first single from the album (the final studio album to be released in Freddie Mercurys lifetime). At 6 minutes 30 seconds, it was even longer than their epic Bohemian Rhapsody (by 35 seconds) and became the third longest UK number1 song of all time, after the Beatles Hey Jude and Simple Minds Belfast Child (soon thereafter the 9 minutes 38 seconds All Around The World by Oasis took over the top slot and demoted Innuendo to fourth place). For Innuendos flamenco guitar solo, Brian May was joined by Yes guitarist Steve Howe. The song also features an operatic interlude that harks back to the Queen of old, sections of heavy metal, and lyrics inspired in part by lead singer Freddie Mercurys illness; although media stories about his health were being strenuously denied, he was by now suffering from the HIV/AIDS virus which would ultimately claim his life in November 1991. Accompanied by this music video featuring animated representations of the band on a cinema screen akin to Nineteen Eighty-Four, eerie plasticine figure stop-motion and harrowing imagery, it has been described as one of the bands darkest and most moving works. AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide or AMG) described the song as a superb epic, which deals with mankinds inability to live harmoniously.
