Time to pay our respects to…the immigrants? That is right. Without immigrants, Canada would not really be able to exist. At first, the immigration system was not really set up in a way that was easy at all. There were long-winded and elaborate laws and regulations that made it difficult for anyone who was not coming from Europe or the United States. People coming from Asian and Jewish refugees were basically excluded from this system. In this day and age, Canada benefits from its’ immigrants. We look to them for their skills, intelligence and cultural diversity. In fact, both the DalaiLama and Aga Khan have established centre’s for peace in Canada. Now that has got to say something for our nation, doesn’t it? You can walk down the street and see a mosque and a church on the same street. This just goes to show open and accepting Canada is to different ethnicities, cultures and backgrounds. Now, it is not all rainbows and sunshine. There are still times when we see racial profiling or anti-immigrant beliefs being played out within our society. We have seen things like Sikh police officers fight for their right to wear a turban. Recently, there have been complaints of Chinese University students and the fact that there are too many of them who are apparently taking away seats from “our” children. Many people believe in both views—immigrants are great and immigrants are a burden. Perhaps we should look at both views to try to understand where each party is coming from. For those who believe that immigrants are a burden believe this because of the fact that immigrants are now taking longer than their predecessors to attain income levels that are equal to the Canadian born citizen who has the same education and are in the same occupations. The other view of this argument is that immigrants are assets to this nation. Studies show that 24 per cent of the millionaires in Canada are immigrants and that another 24 per cent are the children of millionaires. These people do not just come here with money. They are hard-working, studious and self-made. They have worked endlessly to start and grow a business. They aim to truly live the Canadian dream and want to give their kids a better life. Immigrants are most likely to create the businesses, tax dollars and jobs than native Canadians are. Canada can truly claim to be a mosaic within the world. It has become a beautiful, well-put and well-fitted together nation.
