While I can appreciate the need to continue to expand the corporate infrastructure in Forsyth County, I do not believe that a waste management facility in such close proximity to residential neighborhoods and local businesses is the answer. As a resident of Forsyth County, I am concerned about this proposal for a number of reasons: • Traffic - Increased traffic on Highway 9 will deter customers from wanting to frequent businesses or purchase homes located in this area. • Road deterioration - Due to the weight and size of garbage trucks, they can accelerate the rate of deterioration of highways and roads. • Garbage Trucks – While todays garbage trucks typically do not litter highways with garbage, many of them leak liquid wastes and liquids that have come in contact with the garbage on the roadways. It is not uncommon, especially during wet periods, to see a trail of garbage juice behind a garbage truck after the truck has picked up the garbage from the area. • Noise - Truck and other vehicular traffic and equipment used at landfills are noisy and can be damaging and disruptive to those who use properties near the landfill • Vermin, vulture, rodents and coyotes– Waste management facilities are “dirty” and odorous and generate waste and smells that attract disease, vectors and vermin. • Compromised Quality of Life – Waste Management facilities can result in water and soil contamination. Trucks let off emissions, soot and odors. All of these factors can adversely impact the aesthetic quality of the area. • Property Values – Property values in both the immediate and surrounding areas will decrease substantially. Everyone is familiar with the phrase “Not In My Backyard”. While there may be a need to have an additional waste management facility in Forsyth County, the proposed location would adversely affect the property value in local businesses and residences in the surrounding area based on all of the reasons previously stated. According to the Forsyth County Land Use Plan, the proposed area for the waste management facility is in an area that is “in need of redevelopment or significant improvements to aesthetics or attractiveness.” (Source: Forsyth County Land Use Plan page 8-13). A waste management facility does not correspond with the vision outlined in this report. Please don’t let the quality of life in the “Gateway to Forsyth County” be compromised. The development of this waste management facility will not only affect those within the immediate area, but it will also have a cascading impact to those who reside in Milton, North Fulton and also in other areas of South Forsyth County. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, ____________________ (Your Name)
