Time to up the anti? For some time now, I have been working on having the cultural heritage of Tasmanian timber communities formerly recognized. Those who have, and still do work within the timber industry in Tasmania HAVE made a significant contribution to shaping our state! We have a long history that goes back BEFORE European settlement. I wonder how many people realise that the site at Port Arthur, a major part of Australian history, was settled for its rich source of timber and its deep sea port where timber was exported? Anyhoo, trying NOT to get on my soap box! The men and women who have worked in our timber industry, past and present - in a direct role, or as indirect support have had a significant impact on our state. Through generations, towns have been built. Communities have been formed. Connections with community have occurred. And an identity has been formed! When asked how would you describe yourself? - how many would reply I am a logger I am a forester I am a boat builder I am a timber craftsman. How many would people would say they grew up in a Timber town. How many wives/ girlfriends (and vice versa) have supported and been supported by their men who work with timber? How many of our towns and communities were built and survived around timber harvesting. Isnt it time that the hard work of men and women who have worked our land and provided the back bone of our economy, was recognised? Isnt it time for some validation of all that hard work? Isnt it time that the vilification of those people who work our land to provide for our people stopped, and those who respect the bush and use the skills and knowledge that has been passed on through generations and improved upon to provide worlds best practice, those who have a desire to provide the best possible outcomes for the people whilst respecting nature and ensuring its protection -was recognised? Off my soap box now, but would love to get some feed back. https://youtube/watch?v=7W4Bn3OiSng
