Timely Tip The shad spawn is starting to happen in the south and will spread northward as the weather continues to warm. A spinnerbait is the best lure for this situation as the shad will follow and dart in and out of the blades. Look for shad to be spawning in and around shallow cover in particular during the early morning hours. When you see the shad following your spinnerbait back to the boat you are in the right area. My favorite places are shoreline bank grass or if your lake has submergent vegetation like hydrilla or milfoil. The bass will be schooled up, so when you find them work those areas thoroughly. This creates an Alabama Rig looking situation with all of the shad that follow the spinnerbait back in. Remember fish it slow and hang on!!
