Times Live reports that the police fire at least one rogue officer every day. In the past 18 months, they have dismissed 777 officers, most of them, said spokesman Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale, for criminal offences. From April 1 to October, Makgale said, 240 officers were dismissed. The president of the SA Police Union (Sapu), Mpho Kwinika, claimed none of the 777 fired officers was a member of the union. He said yesterday that the dismissal of so many officers showed that the service was in crisis. The lack of leadership has contributed to the crisis that the police are in. These figures, and the fact that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate is also probing more than 60 allegations of rape by police officers, is cause for concern, said Kwinika. The union stated that poor management compromised service delivery, and demoralised the committed men and women in blue. Solidarity, with 2,500 members in the police, said none of the axed officers were its members. The unions Dirk Groenewald said that he found the figures suspicious. None of our members was dismissed or has lodged a complaint about dismissals since April. It creates suspicion, he stated.
