Times leader today reports that Professor Michael Arthur, president and provost of University College London (UCL), has said that his institution needs to improve its undergraduate teaching accordingly. To fail to do so would be to risk losing applicants to other places, which would, in time, impair the research capability of the university too. All the top professors will have their contracts changed so that excellence in teaching is as important a part of their assessment as brilliance in research. More evidence, if any were needed, that the university is now becoming a place that exists for students than for the sake of truth. More like a creche than a midwife of knowledge. Goodbye to brilliant but unworldly dons and hello to learning facilitators and flip charts.
