Times of India Govt assures strong action TNN | Jan 24, 2014, 02.31 AM IST. KOLKATA: The Mamata Banerjee government is taking firm and decisive action in the Birbhum gang-rape case. Mukul Roy, who is accompanying the CM in Darjeeling, said: Government is firm and is for the strictest action against the culprits for committing this heinous crime. All the accused have been arrested by the police and a probe is on. The party and government are for the harshest possible measures to deal with the cases of rape. It is a social malaise and we shall combat it politically, socially and administratively. In Kolkata, Shashi Panja said: We are sensitive to the issue and doing everything possible to not only ensure justice to her but also ensure an example is set by giving stringent punishment to the culprits. This, however, was undermined by the police action. The CM was upset that neither IGP (western range) nor the Burdwan range DIG had visited the spot, say sources. She was also angry that police did not seek remand. This undermined her governments stated objectives, she said. Taking matters in her hand, the CM spoke to chief secretary Sanjoy Mitra and decided to transfer Birbhum SP C Sudhakar. Darjeeling SP Kunal Agarwal, who was with her - and scheduled for transfer - was asked to replace him.
